Staying on Point

by Sis. Kim McDougal

“I will bless the LORD who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.” – Psalms 16:7, 8 (NLT)

When an athlete is running a race, it’s so important for him or her to stay on the track, completely focused ahead in order to win. You never see them look back or from side to side do you? If they did, they would get sidetracked and no longer be aiming for the target which is to get to the finish line faster than their opponents.

In life, we are running a race, oh not the same as an athlete, but we are trying to reach our finish line too which is to be with the Lord forever and to do that, we need to stay focused on the target. However, unlike an athlete, in our case we have all kinds of diversions that unfortunately can grab our attention and off we go! We get off the track and sometimes we get so far away from it that we have a hard time getting back. How can we avoid this?

The best way is to stay as close to God on a daily basis. For example, the athlete works out, practices, cross-trains, sticks to a strict diet all so they have the stamina, will-power, and strength to endure the race and be competitive enough to win. Our training comes in the form of daily prayer, reading God’s word and meditating on it, letting His word sink into our hearts, turning our troubles to Him, allowing Him to lead us and orchestrate our steps. It comes from fellowshipping with other christians who build us up to help us stay on course. May we see the target today and purpose in our hearts to stay on point with the Lord always.
