What Were You Thinking?!

by Kim McDougal

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” – II Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

Many of our reactions to situations begin with a single thought. Sometimes, we can even conjure up scenarios that never happen in our own minds. Negative thoughts unchecked can lead to bitterness, hate, anger, depression, jealousy, offense, and even turn to outright actions like revenge, slander, gossip, and coveting. This is why it is sooo important to immediately rebuke a negative thought the moment it comes into your mind. Satan loves to play there, because naturally we tend to think negative before we think positive, so what better way for Satan to have the victory than to attack our minds first?

Today’s passage is important, because it is our defense to his offense! We get a thought like, “I wonder where she bought that dress, in my opinion it’s not really flattering on her!” Immediately, we need to denounce that thought with, “But, you know what?, I’m so glad she’s happily wearing that dress, praise God that she likes it!”  or sometimes you’re praying and the enemy puts a thought up like, “Does God really care about your prayer?” And if we’re not careful, we might agree with that statement. If we don’t attack back, we can begin to doubt whether God even cares about us. So if that happens to you, you can say: “Yes, my God cares about me, I’m His child and I’m talking to Him, get behind me Satan, in Jesus name, AMEN!” The enemy HATES when we counteract him like that and God gets all the praise! And, if you’re like me, you want to give the Devil all the black eyes you can, right?!

So, before you think of reacting harshly or too quickly before you have a chance to settle down, rebuke that thought, bring it to the Lord if you have to and ask His help to make your thoughts holy and conform to His. Before long, this practice of bringing your negative thought life into captivity will become a lifestyle for you. You’ll be in the habit of thinking positive and joyful thoughts and the negative ones won’t have any control over you. Today, let’s not let our negative thoughts become strongholds in our life. Let’s immediately nail them to the cross and live with a free mind!
